Gravel Order, Delivery, And Installation Tips For Great Landscaping Updates

Posted on

A landscape gravel project in your yard allows you to get an attractive looking feature with the durability of rock that lasts for decades. Be sure to plan for your gravel delivery and installation to ensure the entire project runs smoothly and is a success. Here are some considerations to help you with your gravel landscape project this season.

Order the Appropriate Delivery

When you are planning to install a gravel covering in your yard, whether as a mulch ground cover or as a gravel layered pavement, you need to calculate your needs so you can order sufficient gravel delivery. For example, if you need enough gravel to cover a gravel paved site, you will need to order gravel in several sizes: a larger gravel as the base layer, medium sized gravel as the mid layer, and a smaller angular gravel for the top layer. These will compact in place for a durable surface.

Calculate how much gravel you will need to fill your gravel site by calculating it in yardage, and remember there are three feet in one yard so square footage needs to be divided by nine. Your landscape supplier can help you calculate your complete order needs for the right delivery amount. This enables you to get a sufficient amount of gravel delivered to your home, especially when the delivery driver will deliver it and deposit it into your yard. However, be sure the driver will have a clear access to your yard in order to deposit the gravel, which may not be directly on your work site. If, for example, you are installing gravel on your side yard where the delivery truck cannot reach, the driver can deposit it onto the front yard and you will need to move it via wheelbarrow to its designated area.

Install the Gravel

Gravel landscaping materials will need a good foundation for placement in order to remain in place without weed and vegetation growth becoming a problem. If you are installing gravel over your bedding areas as a mulch, it is a good idea to install landscape fabric as a barrier to keep the soil from coming up into the gravel. Look for a landscape fabric that is durable to last many seasons and install it with landscape pins to hold it in place and with overlapped edges to prevent weed growth from coming up through the gravel. You may find it helpful to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the area soil, landscape fabric, and gravel to prevent the occurrence of weed seeds germinating and growing up into your new gravel layers.
